Pet Care Tip of the Week
When the temperature is very high, don't let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close the ground, your pooch's body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during
these times to a minimum and buy shoes for your pooch.

Bird Care Tips

The Overhead Fan
Moving objects overhead make pet birds nervous anyway, but the overhead fan is like a giant, slicing turbine to a roaming pet bird. Keep the fan off when your bird is out on a jaunt.

Hot Weather Tips Dog drinking water

In Arizona, we would love to spend the long, sunny days of summer outdoors, but being in extreme hot weather spells danger, especially for our furry friends, warns ASPCA experts.

Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it's hot outdoors. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful to not over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it's extremely hot.

What Are the General Symptoms of Dehydration in Dogs?
  • Sunken eyes
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dry mouth
  • Depression
What Should I Do if I Think My Dog is Dehydrated?
  • If you suspect that your dog is dehydrated, take him to a veterinarian immediately.
  Are Certain Dogs Prone Dehydration?
  • Those who suffer from various illnesses such as kidney disorders, cancer, and infectious disease
  • Elderly dogs, pregnant, or nursing dogs may be prone to dehydration, as well as diabetic dogs whose condition is not regularly monitored
How Can I Prevent Dehydration?
  • Provide clean water at all times and change it frequently to ensure freshness
  • Generally, a dog needs at least one ounce of water for each pound of body weight per day
  • Purchase a water bowl with a weighted bottom to prevent your dog from knocking it over
  • Bring extra water when you travel or exercise your dog
  • Avoid chaining a dog outside (especially in AZ!) since he may get tangled up, preventing access to the water bowl
  • Keep you toilet lid closed to hinder your dog's efforts to turn it into a water fountain, which can be a source of bacteria
Summer Hairdo!
  • Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a 1" length, but never to the skin, so your dog still has some protection from the sun
  • Any sunscreen or insect repellent product you use on your pet needs to be labeled specifically for use on animals

Why Do Some Cats Eliminate Outside
the Litter Box?

If your cat isn’t comfortable with her litter box or can’t easily access it, she probably won’t use it. The following common litter-box problems might cause her to eliminate outside of her box:

  • You haven’t cleaned your cat’s litter box often or thoroughly enough
  • You haven’t provided enough litter boxes for your household. Be sure to have a litter box for each of your cats, as well as one extra
  • Your cat’s litter box is too small
  • Your cat can’t easily get to her litter box at all times
  • Your cat’s litter box has a hood or liner that makes her uncomfortable
  • The litter in your cat’s box is too deep. Cats usually prefer one to two inches of litter
